Small sun and rays on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand raised against a plain wall, showing a small tattoo on the inner wrist. The tattoo is a simple outline of a sun with short radiating rays, with two overlapping circles beside it. The linework is thin and even, and the image has no colour ink, so the tattoo appears in black and grey.

Fog had sat on Hollin Farm for nine days, so thick that the top field vanished at the gate and the ewes came to you out of nothing, breath steaming, complaining as though the sun were something they had been promised. Your uncle said it would lift by Candlemas. You kept your opinions to yourself, because the last time you argued with him about weather he was right and you were soaked to the knee.

The feed bucket knocked against your shin on the frozen path. Halfway up, the grey thinned over the hedge and became a pale coin with a ragged edge, and you stopped to look at it. It was the same shape you had doodled on the back of a feed invoice last spring, the one with the short rays. Your uncle had insisted the two round things beside it were moons. You had insisted they were the cheese wheels from the cold dairy shelf, because you were twelve and hungry and it had seemed a sound argument then.
The ewes pressed in around your boots and forgot the bucket entirely. You counted the rays of light fanning out over the hedge, eleven of them, then lost count when the fog rolled back in like a dropped sheet and the coin dissolved into milk.
You filled the troughs anyway, slower than before, and when you came back down past the gate your uncle was waiting with two mugs of tea and a question in his face. You didn't answer it. You just said the sun had been out, a minute at most, and that the cheeses could wait another day. He laughed, and for once you let him think he had won.
