Small swan tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black swan silhouette sits on the inner forearm, with the neck curved in an S shape and the body filled in with dense black ink. The photograph is taken close up against a wooden bench and a knitted sleeve, and the swan is the clear focus. The tattoo is black only, with the surrounding skin tone and metal bracelet providing the only other colour.

The mere froze three nights running, and still the black swan came down the reed channel each dusk, breaking the skin of ice with her breast as if it were paper. Old Tamsin Reeve at the edge of Hollin Wood had nothing to feed her but barley scraps and a heel of bread, and she said so to the swan out loud, the way she spoke to the bees and the hens.

The village said the swan was a bad sign. Black swans were not for Hollin, the carter said, and the vicar's wife would not walk the lane past the water. Tamsin said nothing to them. She only sent the miller's boy down with a sack of meal, and she held her shawl tight while the swan picked grain from his open palm, her neck bent into that long S the old folk cut above their doors to keep out the fox.
In the thaw the carter's cart went through the ice at the ford, and he came up the bank with his coat full of water and his horse gone under. It was the swan who stood on the bank and hissed until the men followed the sound to the right place. Nobody spoke of bad signs after that. Tamsin left a lump of coal and a wedge of cheese on the flat stone by the water, and every dusk the swan came to take her share.
By spring the carter had cut a swan's neck into the lintel of his own door, and the mere kept its one black bird, and Hollin kept the stone clear of ice.
