Small tattoos on a wrist and forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman crouches in a tiled room and takes a mirror selfie with a phone, cropped below the face, wearing a neon yellow top, black leggings and neon yellow trainers. Two small tattoos are visible: a tiny mark on the wrist and a vertical column of fine black marks on the forearm, with delicate linework. The black ink contrasts with the bright clothing, which dominates the frame.

The gale had been at the rock for nine days when Ada Pringle climbed the iron stair with the flask and found the tally wrong. Forty-one strokes in soot on the lamp-room lintel, the old keeper's count of blows, and beneath them a fresh column of tiny marks in a hand she didn't know, as though someone had been up here while she slept on the mainland.

She checked the logbook. Nothing had been signed since the Tuesday, and the boat had been cancelled twice. She rubbed one of the new marks with her thumb. It came away grey and smeared, still faintly tacky. Below the window the sea had gone the colour of wet slate, and the lamp hummed its low note the way it always did, as if it had never once been switched off.
She sat on the step with the flask cooling in her lap and counted. Thirty-six new marks, one for every hour since the Thursday she had been stuck on the jetty with a turned ankle. Thirty-six hours the light had burned with no keeper's hand on the switch, and nothing had gone dark.
She took the chalk from the drawer, made her own stroke beside the column, then stopped and wrote below it in small square letters: Relieved, thank you. By morning the column had grown down the iron and onto the sill, and the chalk lay there, still warm from someone's hand.
