Small triangle tattoo on a finger
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph shows a hand with one finger extended, bearing a small tattoo of an outlined triangle with a short line inside it. The fine, simple linework is in black ink and sits near the lower part of the finger. The background is a textured grey surface with a white sneaker partly visible at the right.

Mr Okafor's rule was that every row ends at a triangle, and nobody argues with a rule chalked on a gatepost. By the first week of September the Bramley rows were heavy and the ladders had gone wet with dew, so I was sent up the slope with a pot of white paint and a brush, marking the three corner trees of each block so the pickers would know where the line stopped.

The trick, he said, was the line inside. A triangle on its own only tells you where the edge is. The line says which way the wind comes from and which tree the frost took first. He had been an orchard man for forty years and talked about trees the way other men talk about horses, as if they might bolt if you looked away for too long.
I painted eleven triangles that afternoon. On the twelfth tree, an old Egremont Russet by the fence, the bark had split in a shape that already looked like one, so I left it alone and drew only the line. When Mr Okafor came up at dusk he stood under it for a long time, then pressed his thumb to the paint, which was still tacky, and said that was the one he'd want to be buried under.
He said nothing more about it. The next morning the pickers came through the gate with their baskets, and the first thing each of them did was find that tree and lay a hand on its trunk, as if it were a door they had been told to knock on.
