Small heart and key tattoos on two hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped against a dark background, and the photograph is in black and white. A small outlined heart with a keyhole sits on one finger, and a tiny key is drawn in thin black linework on the other hand. The tattoos are small and simple, with no shading, and the tight framing keeps the focus on the two marks.

Sit nearer, the rain's only resting, and the gas lamps on Tanner's Row won't go out until the last cart has rattled past. You want the one about the locksmith's boy? Good. Eli Varga kept a shop under the railway arches, where a train shook dust from the ceiling every twelve minutes, and he could open any lock in the city without breaking it. Men brought him chests they had lost the keys to, and widows brought drawers their husbands had sworn were empty.

One wet November a girl came in off the canal with a heart-shaped padlock in her fist. Its keyhole was no bigger than a thumbnail, and it had no key. She said her grandmother had locked a letter inside it the week before the ships went out, and the key had gone down the drain with a broken teacup. Eli turned the lock over under his lamp for three nights. On the fourth he cut a key from a blank no wider than a fingernail, filed it until it hung just so, and found it would not turn in the lock at all.

"It needs two hands," he told her, and she laughed at him until he showed her. Only held together, palm to palm, could the bow and the shank line up. The grandmother had known it, and so had the man who sold her the lock. They had made it for two people, not one.

So the girl and her young man each kept a half of the thing, and the letter stayed where it was, unread. Sometimes, when the trains have stopped, the girl swears the paper inside is blank. I tell her she is wrong. It says what it has always said, and it waits for the two of them to come back under the arches and read it aloud.
