Small triangle tattoo on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long, wavy hair faces away from the camera, showing a small dark triangle tattoo high on her upper back. The triangle appears to have simple solid or lined shading in black ink, set against bare skin above a deep V-shaped backless gown. The composition includes a full-length oval mirror on the right, a white wall and pipes, and a royal blue satin ball gown that dominates the frame.

The third bearing would not sit still, so I walked the cliff path twice before I trusted my own eyes. Ruth had the theodolite fixed on the church tower at Porthkennack while I stood on the breakwater with the chain in my fist, counting links against the wind. Two marks made a line. A third made a shape, and the shape was the whole point of the county survey: three stones that could not be argued with.

The old men in the Ship Inn said the triangle cut into the harbour wall had been there since the Admiralty came in 1812, a small point of granite with a broad base turned to the sea. Nobody could say which corner had been lost first. Mr Pascoe, who had charted these waters for thirty years, swore the north stone had been shifted by a storm and that the sea had taken a yard of the line with it. I did not believe him until the sums refused to close.
Ruth's sister wrote from Plymouth that week, asking whether we had found the lost mark. I wrote back that we had found three of them and one disagreement, which is a surveyor's way of saying the map is honest and the land is not. We set a new cairn on the shingle at low water, and I scratched a small triangle into its face with a nail, so the next man would know where to start counting.
When the tide came in over the stones that evening, the triangle filled with grey water first, then its edges, and the whole thing went under as neatly as a sum I had already checked twice.
