Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out, and you will hear the rest of it. The road south of Tamsar was cut by men who never once saw water running on it, and the only creature that walked it without complaint was Orsa, a grey cow elephant as old as the well at Hadra Crossing. She carried salt for a trader named Idris Vane, who was forever counting his coins and never once counting the days of water left in the skins.

In the fourth week the wind came up out of the west, the kind that sands the teeth and takes the names off your tongue. Idris lost sight of the track and cursed the ground for hiding from him. Orsa stopped. She lifted her head and swung her trunk slowly to the left, curling the tip the way a man beckons, and then she walked off that way with the rope slack in her hands. The drivers swore and followed her because there was nothing else to do. An hour later she knelt on a hard shelf of rock and scraped at it with one forefoot until a stone cistern showed its lip, cool and full, sweet enough to make a grown man weep.

Idris did not thank her. He sold her to a dealer in Kasr Remmel before the month was out, and she went quietly, which is more than he did. But the drivers who lived carved her curled trunk into the waymarkers along that road, one stone after another, so that a thirsty traveller would know which way the water lay. You will still find them there. Keep the sun on your left hand, friend, and follow the curl.
