Small elephant outline on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small elephant is drawn in a single continuous black line, facing left with its trunk curled down. The linework is thin and even, and the design sits alone on the inner wrist and forearm. The ink is black on pale skin, set against a plain white background with soft natural light.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the flour sacks, because my knees don't bend the way they did when I was your age, and this oven needs feeding while I talk. Bartholomew Pike kept the bakehouse on Chapel Row before the lamps were lit, and every morning he walked out with the first grey light to fetch the milk from the yard behind the chandler's.

Now, the chandler had a grey elephant carved from soap that stood in his shop window, a gift from a sailor who never came back to claim it. Pike used to say it was the only thing on the street that never complained about the cold. Each dawn he lifted his hat to it, and each dawn it seemed to turn a fraction towards the bakehouse, its trunk curled low as if it were sniffing for bread.
One February morning the window was empty. The soap elephant had gone, and in its place a thread of chalk ran across the sill, drawn in one unbroken line that wandered round and came back to where it began, the trunk curled down. Pike followed it past the pump and the sleeping dogs, and found the chandler's girl sitting on the kerb, sorting a tin of buttons and grinning at him like she'd been waiting all night.
She had sold the soap to a travelling man for a loaf and a promise, she said, and drawn the beast so he would know which way to walk home. Pike bought her a bun that morning and left the chalk where it lay, because on Chapel Row a line that finds its way back is worth more than any carving. Now mind your fingers on that tray. The bread's ready.
