Small umbrella tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black umbrella silhouette sits on the skin behind an ear, with its handle curving downward. The shape has crisp edges and no shading, and the ink is the only colour in the frame. The photograph is a close, slightly angled view of the ear and neck with soft natural light falling from the left.

Dear Ruth,

The Discovery came off on Tuesday, all at once, the way they do when the wasps have been at them for a fortnight and the sky finally breaks. Dad stood under the big umbrella at the end of row six with the ladder folded over his shoulder and wouldn't come in until the last crate was stacked. You know the one. Black, with the spoke that always catches on the gate. Mum says it's older than the orchard gate, which isn't true, but I didn't argue.
Mrs Acheson's boys were picking with us this year, and the youngest, Dev, asked me why the handle curls over like a shepherd's crook. I told him it's so you can hang it on a branch when your hands are full of fruit. He tried it on the Cox tree and got a face full of drip for his trouble, and everybody laughed, even Dad, who had the good grace to pretend he hadn't been about to laugh first.
I've been meaning to say something about your letter. I read it on the bench by the cider press with the umbrella furled across my knees, and I've read it four times since. You were right to go. Don't let the tone of this fool you, though. The trees will still be here at Christmas and so will I. Bring me back something small from the docks, nothing that needs packing.
Love, Nell
