Flying silhouettes behind the ear
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A row of solid black silhouettes of flying figures runs down the skin behind the ear, from a larger flying boy at the top to a small fairy and a figure in a long dress below. The shapes are bold and flat with no internal shading or fine detail, so the outlines carry the design. The image is in black ink only, shot close up against a dark-haired background.

There was a boy with his arms flung wide at the top, a smaller figure trailing something like stars, a girl in a long skirt, and a spark he insisted was a fairy and would not let me call anything else.

"What about the one at the bottom?" he asked, pointing at a squat blob by the radiator. "That one's a shadow who got left behind," I said. "It happens when people run off without looking back." He frowned at it the way he frowned at porridge. "Then somebody has to go and fetch it."
So I stood in the corner by the sink and lifted my arms, and the nightlight made me a shape on the wall, long and thin, tumbling below the girl in the skirt. Oscar laughed for the first time all night, a proper laugh with his whole chest in it. "Now you're flying too," he said, and I found I had to look hard at the blind to hide my face.
At two his mum came back from the vending machine with two teas she had forgotten she'd bought, and stopped in the doorway. Oscar was asleep with one hand hanging over the rail. On the wall the flying shapes had gathered into a little column, my shadow last of all, still trying to catch up.
