A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abigail Coe had kept the Wrenbourne lamp for thirty-one years, and the cat had kept her company for twenty of them. Nobody in the village could say where it came from. It arrived one wet November, sat on the step of the lamp house, and refused to leave, a small black thing with its tail curled over its back like a question mark.

It was the cat who found the drowned boy. Abigail was up the tower trimming wicks when the animal began to yowl at the window facing the Ouse, and by the time she had climbed down and fetched Tom Haddow with his lantern, the cat was already on the sea wall, pacing the mud. They dragged him out before the tide turned. Tom said afterwards that the creature had walked straight to the spot as if someone had told it where to look.

After that, folk came to the lamp house with their lost rings and their missing dogs, and the cat sat on the sill and regarded them with the same unbothered patience. Abigail never charged a penny. She kept a dish of milk by the door and a ledger of who had come and what had been found, and when she died, the cat walked down the lane behind the coffin and did not come back.

The new keeper, a young man called Joseph Lunn, scrubbed the dish each morning and filled it with fresh milk. By the end of the month it was always empty, the saucer bone dry, and he never once saw the cat go in or out. He only knew it was still about the place because, on the first foggy night of spring, the lamp was lit before he had climbed the tower.
