Two footprints on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two footprints sit side by side, each outlined with a thin dark edge and filled with soft grey shading that fades toward the centre of the sole. The toes are rendered as rounded shapes with subtle highlights, and a few small reddish marks appear on some toes. The tattoo sits on a flat area of skin photographed straight on, with the design centred in the frame.

The tide had gone out past the groyne before the church clock struck six, and the mud below Saltersgate lay smooth as pewter. Ada Penrose carried her boots by the laces and walked the line of wrack where nobody else bothered to walk. She was looking for prints. Her father always said the gulls took the crabs, but gulls did not leave heels.

Two sets ran from the slipway toward the rocks, pressed in the grey silt as clean as if they had been stamped. Someone had come down in the night, barefoot, and stood a long while at the edge of the water. The toes were round and deep, each one pushed down and lifted with care. Beside the left heel someone had set a row of small red sea-glass pieces, one for each toe on the right foot, like a tally kept by a person who did not trust themselves to remember the count.
Ada knew the sea-glass. She had collected it from the same tin on the windowsill, the one her mother kept for birthdays and never opened. Her grandmother had been missing since midnight, and the tin was empty now.
Ada stepped into the nearest print. Her heel found the old hollow exactly, the way a key finds a lock it was cut for, and the cold silt closed over her ankle. She stood there until the first thin wash of the tide came sliding back over the flats and filled the shapes behind her, and then she turned and went up the hill to tell the police where to look.
