Small wave tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with gold nail polish, showing a small black tattoo of two wavy brushstrokes on the side of the middle finger. The lines are bold and slightly uneven, with a loose, hand-painted quality, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo and fingers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week of August the Harrow orchard had gone quiet in the way it only did before picking, when the wasps lost interest and the windfalls lay sweet in the grass. You walk the leat with a spade over your shoulder, checking the sluice gates that Tom Greaves built from elm planks before the war. The water comes down from the reservoir above Coldharbour in a thin brown rush, and it knows its way between the Bramleys better than you do.

Your aunt Marjorie kept a notebook of rainfall going back to 1931, pages of figures in pencil, and she used to say the water remembered every dry year. Each August you find yourself doing the sum she taught you: how many rows, how many gallons a tree in drought, how long before the Cox's split on the branch. The numbers never come out clean. The ditch wanders off line where the clay has slumped, and a stoat has dug a hall under the third gate.

On the Thursday the gate sticks, and you kneel in the cold silt with your sleeve rolled to the elbow, working the bar with both hands. Something gives. The water goes through in one long pour, a bright ribbon curling round the roots, and you sit back on your heels and watch it find the low corner of the field where nothing has grown since your grandfather's time. Marjorie would have called it wasted. You let it run.

That evening you write the figure in the back of her notebook, under the last entry in her hand: 14 mm, wet, gate held. Then you draw two short waves beside it, quick and uneven, the way she drew them when the rain had finally come. The ditch hums all night. By morning there is a new line of green along the far bank, and you can hear the apples swelling.
