Three chevrons on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a hand resting on a textured surface, showing three small black chevron shapes stacked along the side of a finger. The lines are crisp, solid and of even weight, with no shading. A thin silver ring sits on an adjacent finger against a softly blurred neutral background.

Right, sit down by the stove and mind the paraffin tin. You want to know how the chevrons came to the Mill Road bends? Then listen, because my father never told it twice and I'll not either.

The winter of the great fog, Harrowgate was a town of lamps that gave up at the second storey. The buses crept along the kerb edge by feel, and by the Wednesday the number nine had gone into the canal twice. Dorothy Pask, who ran the sign works behind the chapel, took a tin of white gloss and a sash brush and went out in the dark with a torch clamped in her teeth. Three short strokes on every lamp post at the bends, each one pointing the way the road turned, stacked like a sergeant's stripes so a driver could count them through the glass.
Nobody paid her and nobody asked. The council sent a letter saying the posts were council property, and she wrote back that the fog was too, and they were welcome to come and scrape it off. Night after night she went round, and night after night the nine came home dry.
On the last night of the fog a boy stopped her at the chapel gate and asked what the marks were for. She told him they were for anyone who needed to know which way was forward when they couldn't see their own hands. He ran off thinking it a daft answer. The morning the fog lifted, the paint was still there under the new coats of council grey, pointing left, pointing left, pointing left, all the way home.
