Small Gemini symbol on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of the Gemini zodiac symbol sits on the side of a finger, close to the knuckle. The linework is thin and the glyph has a slightly serif, stroked appearance, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken at close range against a plain pale blue background, with the hand held up and a silver band on the index finger and metallic nail polish visible.

The lamp on Skerry Holm needed only one keeper at a time, which was the whole trouble. Tomas and Edvard Lund had been born eleven minutes apart and had never agreed on anything a coin could not settle, so when the lighthouse board offered a single post they settled it the only way left to them. They took turns, a week on the rock and a week ashore, and told the board nothing.

Edvard kept the lamp trimmed and the logbook honest, but on the weeks Tomas was ashore he wrote the entries in his brother's hand, and Tomas wrote them back in his. For eleven years the board praised the steady record. Nobody on the mainland thought to ask why the north pier gate carried two pale posts side by side, or why the brothers always met there on the second Thursday to swap the rowing boat.

The winter the lens cracked, Edvard was on the rock with a storm building and Tomas was ashore with a fever he refused to admit. Tomas rowed out anyway. He found his brother on the gallery with his palms bloodied from the glass, and they mended the lens together by the light of a tallow stub, arguing the whole time about which of them had been the honest one.

At dawn the wind dropped. Tomas cut a pair of pillars into the gate post where the boat was tied, two uprights capped top and bottom, and Edvard, who never let anything go unremarked, said it looked like nothing to a stranger. That was the point. The cutter came on Monday and found the lamp burning and both brothers asleep on the same bench, and nobody on the mainland ever learned which one had been keeping watch.
