Mind the weed on the slipway, my love, it's like soap this time of year. Come and sit on the upturned crab boat where I can see your face. No, the flask first. Tea is what keeps a story honest. The sea doesn't give back what it takes, that's the first thing your grandad told me, and he was wrong about most things but not that one.

It was the August after the big storm, and the whole of Porthmellin was out on the sand with rakes and dogs, picking over the wrack line like it owed them money. Our Dora found it near the rocks, tangled in a bit of kelp: a short length of grey beaded wire, and hanging off it a little silver elephant, no bigger than my smallest fingernail. Trunk up, for luck, she said. She brought it straight to me because I had the tea hut and everybody brings me things.

I knew whose it was before I'd finished my first look. Tomas Rowe from the lifeboat had worn one like it all last summer, out to the boat and back, and he'd told anyone who'd listen that his brother sold silver by weight in a market in Goa. Dora wanted to run up the cliff path with it. I told her the sea had carried it a long way and could carry it a bit further. So we walked it along the tideline to the lifeboat house, one step at a time, letting the water fold in over our boots.

Tomas was at the slipway mending a net. He looked at that little charm for a long while, then took it from Dora's palm and closed her fingers back over it. Keep it, he said, somebody ought to. Then he went back to his net, and that's the whole of it. You're not eating that biscuit? Give it here.
