Small white script tattoo of the word love on the side of a finger on a hand with blue painted nails, in a lettering style.

Small white script word love on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand showing the word love written in small, loose, joined script on the side of one finger. The ink appears white or very pale, so the lettering stands out only lightly against the skin. The hand rests against a dark fabric background, with blue painted nails and soft natural light.

Dear Ivo,

The frost came early this year and the lane to the beeches has turned to glass, so I went the long way round by the mill. Mrs Pargeter is still poorly with her chest, and I have been sitting with her in the evenings, reading her the weddings and cattle prices from the Gazette. She asked after you. I told her you were counting the days until the thaw, and she laughed until she coughed.

I have something foolish to confess. Father's pot of pale marking ink is still on the shelf in the barn, the stuff he used on the ewes so the flock could be told apart at the far gate. Yesterday I dipped the fine brush in it and wrote on the side of my middle finger, very small and joined, the way you always teased me for writing. The ink stings a little and it will not show much unless the light is low, which suits me. Mrs Pargeter saw it over her spectacles and said it looked like a ring that had slipped off somewhere it shouldn't.

You said you would be home before the lambs. The ink will fade in a month and the trough water will take the rest, so I shall write it again each Sunday until you come up the track through the trees. If you arrive at dusk, look for the gatepost first, then look for my hand. It will be the one that isn't holding the lamp.

Yours, always, Nell
