I have started drawing the little heart you asked about on the backs of the customs forms, the ones nobody reads. Mine has an arrow through its lower side, and I keep the outline dotted, because a solid line would mean the border was closed for good, and a dotted one means someone is still allowed to pass a pen across it. Mr Halász at the next window says I am wasting ink.

Yesterday the bus from your side stopped with nine people aboard and one suitcase tied with rope. I stamped nine passports and made nine small ticks in the ledger. Then a boy of about six pressed his face to the glass and drew a heart in the condensation, and a tired woman beside him traced the arrow through it with one finger before the bus pulled away.

I am enclosing a copy of that drawing, the dots done with the tip of a pin, so you can see how it is managed. Post me one back, and tell me whether the blue ink arrives whole. Yours, Teodora.
