Small winged motif on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a stylised winged figure with a round body and fanned, feather-like wings sits on the inner forearm. The outlines are thin and unshaded, in dark grey-black ink against pale skin. The close crop shows a gold bangle on the wrist and a blurred tan top and background.

Dear Ruth, the glass has dropped again since Tuesday, so Skipper Garvie says we'll lie in at Scalloway until Thursday, which suits me, because my hands still haven't stopped aching from the last haul. The new net is heavier than the old one and twice as stubborn, and Robbie Sinclair lost two fingernails on the warp before breakfast.

There's a kittiwake that has taken to our stern since we left the Sound. It sits on the rail with its wings half open, as if someone has asked it to hold still for a photograph, and it never once begs for bait like the others do. The men have started calling it Mrs Garvie, because it stares at anyone who comes aft and never agrees with a thing they say. I've been sketching it on the back of the fuel chart, the round white body and the fanned feathers at the wingtips, the way you used to draw birds in my schoolbooks when Mam was on nights.

Last night, with the wind going through the rigging and nobody sleeping, I finished it properly in biro. It looks like a little lantern with wings, which is daft, but it kept my eyes off the black water long enough to get through the middle watch. I've folded it into my oilskin pocket so it will be dry when I get home. Give it to Tam when he's old enough not to tear it up, and tell him the bird wasn't frightened of anything out here, not even us.

We'll be in on Friday if the weather holds. Put the kettle on, and if Mrs Garvie is still following the harbour wall, tell her I said hello. Your loving brother, Davie.
