A person is photographed from behind, showing their lower legs below a light blue skirt, with white socks and white sneakers. Dear Tomasz,

The lamp was turned down again last night, the one in the lower room that sticks, and Father sat on the stairs with the oilcan on his knees and said nothing for an hour. When I brought him tea he took it and said "dobrze", the way Mama used to say it when a loaf came out right or the boat came back before dark. Good, well, alright. He has said it a hundred times since the gale took the rail. It means nothing much, and it means he is still here.

I went out on the gallery this morning to look for the grey seal that sleeps on the rocks off the point. Instead I found the Wrackham boy's dinghy lying upturned in the shingle, painted the same blue as Mama's old skirt, and I sat down beside it and cried like a fool until the gulls lost interest. Nobody came. That is the thing about this island: you can weep in full view of the whole sea and no one thinks to ask.

Here is what I have decided. When you come home at Michaelmas, you will climb the seventy-one steps with the bag of cuttlefish you always promise, and you will not ask whether Father is better. You will just say the word, the one he says. I will be at the top with the glass polished, and I will answer you the same way, and we will both pretend it is true until it is.

Your sister, Halina
