Girl Power and Wildstyle thigh tattoos
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the front of two bare thighs below a yellow and black checked skirt. On the right thigh is a black line drawing of a seated woman in front of a city skyline, with plants at either side and the word WILDSTYLE arched above her, and the word POWER written below. The word GIRL sits in plain black block capitals on the left thigh, and the linework is even with no shading or colour.

Nell had three cans left and a wall to finish before the yard lights came on at the depot. Dee held the torch steady against the brick while Nell shook the red can until the ball rattled, the sound loud enough to make them both wince.

The figure was the piece she had been sketching on the backs of bus timetables since spring: a woman seated on her elbows, legs bent, looking out over a skyline of blocky towers. Ferns grew at either side, thick as hands, pushing up through the cracked concrete the way they did along the sleepers. Above her head Nell wrote WILDSTYLE in tangled letters, the older writers' way, so that anyone outside the crew would have to squint a minute before they could read it. She filled the outlines first, then went back for the shadows.
A security van crawled along the fence with its headlights off. Dee killed the torch and they dropped flat on the ballast, the stones pressing through Nell's jumper. The beam swept over the carriages, stopped on the wall for a long breath, then slid away towards the signal box. Nell lay with her cheek on the gravel and counted the seconds, her heart louder than the engine. When the van finally rolled off, she crawled back to the brick and finished the last word by feel, the letters a little crooked.
At dawn the wall was the first thing the commuters on the platform saw. Dee read the words aloud, slowly, the way you'd read a dare. Nell said nothing. She just watched the woman on the wall look back at the sun coming up over the towers.
