Double chevron on the back of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck, with dark hair falling across the upper shoulder and a grey knit top at the bottom of the frame. The tattoo is two small, stacked chevron arrows drawn in thin, solid black lines with no shading. The plain pale skin and neutral background keep the focus on the small, simple mark.

He says the mark has been on the crates since his father's day, and that nobody has ever stacked a box upside down and lived to say so.

I've been turning that over since Tuesday. Mum used to say we were all upright sorts in this family, and I never understood what she meant until I watched the fruit slide down the chute with its bruises facing the right way. Careful things travel up. Heavy things sink if you let them.
Last night I walked the far rows with the lamp, counting windfalls, and found a crate packed wrong, apples rolled into one corner and the arrows sitting underneath like a joke. I nearly left it. Instead I stood it straight, turned the arrows to the sky, and carried it to the lorry myself. Pryce saw me from the gate and said nothing, only nodded at the mark. I'll be home by the first of October with ten pounds more than I came with and a stubborn new sense of which way is up.
Keep my room aired. Those arrows always meant up, Mum said, and I suppose that's the only direction I'm going. Love, Dot.
