Smiling man in fedora portrait on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A realistic portrait of a smiling man in a fedora, collared shirt and bow tie, shown in three-quarter view. Soft greyscale shading models the face, hat and clothing, while an orange and red glow sits behind the head. The portrait fills the forearm with the hat near the top of the design.

We came up past Keadby the week the sun went down copper every evening, and I'd find him at the tiller grinning at nothing, as if someone had told him the best joke of his life and he was saving it for the lock-keepers. Mum said it was the heron that did it. A grey bird stood on the same post at Torksey every morning and never once flinched when the barge went by, and Dad would raise two fingers to it like a man greeting an old rival.
The summer he died, my brother wanted to sell the boat. I didn't argue. I went down to the cabin for the last box of charts and found a tin under the bunk, rusty at the seams. Inside was one photograph of Dad at nineteen, bow tie crooked, laughing at whoever held the camera. On the back, in pencil, he'd written: Tell them I was happy here.
So at Torksey lock I stood on the gunwale, took off my own cap, and held it out over the water until the heron lifted away.
