The Palais smelled of Brylcreem and spilt cider, and the band had started up again over the ballroom floor when Danny Quill came back to the card table with empty pockets. Mr Harrow didn't look up from his shuffling. He had the kind of patience that made everyone else in the room seem rushed.

"You're short, son," he said. "Short men dance faster."

He fanned three cards across the baize and tapped the middle one. It was a faun, drawn in pen and grey wash, hairy to the chest, with hooves planted on the card's edge and a small human face screwed up as if it had heard a bad joke. Danny had seen that card before. It was always the odd one out, the one Harrow never let anyone cut to. "Take it and the debt's paid," Harrow said. "Leave it and you dance until the band packs up."

Danny reached. The card was cold, and when he turned it over the ballroom had gone quiet except for the clock ticking above the bar. His feet felt light, then wrong, as though the leather of his good shoes had softened and parted. He looked down. Two dark hooves clicked on the parquet, and the band, which had been playing a foxtrot, slid sideways into a reel.

Harrow gathered the cards and slipped them into his breast pocket with a neat, dry smile. "Everyone thinks the faun wants their wages," he said. "It wants the floor. Go on, son. Dance."
