Snarling panther head tattoo on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The left panel is a close photograph of a bold panther head with a snarling open mouth, red tongue, and green eyes, placed on the upper arm. The right panel shows the same design digitally pasted over the shoulder of a cougar, so it reads as a side-by-side comparison rather than a real tattoo on an animal. The linework is dark and heavy, with green and red used as the main colour accents against grey and black shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The heat had softened the tar on Route 9 by noon, and Ruth Ashby knelt on a sheet of plywood behind the diner, mixing a green so dark it looked wet. The job was a panther for Vic Dorrance, who ran the breakdown garage at the crossroads and wanted the snarl on his flatbed's tailgate. "Make it look like it's about to eat the next driver," he had said, and paid her half in cash and half in bottled water.

She worked the heavy black outline first, the way her father had taught her on shop signs, then the open jaws with fangs like bent nails and a tongue she built up in three thin coats of red. The eyes took longest. She wanted them to follow you from the corner of a mirror, so she painted the pupils a fraction off centre and left a white glint on each one like a headlamp seen through dust.

Vic came back at dusk with a stranger in a grey hire car who wanted the same cat on his door. The stranger watched her blend the green and asked why it had to be so mean-looking. He said he had passed a cougar standing in the wash that morning, and it had stared at him just like that before it turned and walked into the rocks without hurrying.

By sunrise the flatbed was gone, leaving tyre marks in the sand. Ruth found the tailgate panel propped against the diner step, the paint still tacky, and a single red print pressed into the gravel beside it, leading off towards the hills.
