Solar system line tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A row of planets and a sun-like sphere sit along a horizontal line that extends across the forearm, with Saturn drawn larger in the centre and its rings shown in fine strokes. Thin concentric circles and dotted orbital paths link the bodies, and small dots and radiating lines add a sense of motion. The work is entirely in black and grey ink, with soft shading on the planets against clean, precise linework.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top came down in Swindon on Tuesday, sagging in the rain like a wet sail, and by Wednesday Mr Vance had sold the elephant to a man from Reading who kept asking whether she was insured. I write from the last caravan with a working gas ring and a kettle that whistles, which is more than the others can claim.

You asked in your last letter what I do all day now that the trapeze rigging has gone. I still wind the orrery every morning. It is the only thing Father built that nobody could pawn. Nine brass planets on wire hoops, a gilt sun the size of a grapefruit, and Saturn sitting out past Jupiter with its ring tilted just so. Nobody pays a penny to see it now. I wind it for the orbits, which keep their own time whether or not there is a crowd.

Last Thursday the lad from the auction came with his clipboard and wanted it for a bar in Leeds. He held Saturn up to the window and said the ring was the best bit, fine as a hair. I told him the ring had been cracked since 1957 and mended with a bit of Mother's sewing wire. He put the clipboard away, left a cheque on the step that I cannot cash, and drove off with the sun lamp still in his pocket.

So I have kept it. Tonight I am hanging the whole thing from the awning hook, the lamp behind it, and the planets are throwing their small shadows across the wet grass in long ellipses. Saturn goes round once in the wind, slow and certain, and I sit here with the kettle going cold and watch it.
