Solid black fill and spiral on a lower leg

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a lower leg with a large, freshly applied solid black area running down the shin or calf, with a black line spiral at the lower edge. The black fill is glossy and slightly raised, with a ragged edge at the top where the skin is still reacting. Red smears are visible on the clear plastic wrap to the right, and the background is white.

The black went on in the wrong light, which Tallis always said it would. I did the upper courses at dawn with the sheeting pegged to the gallery rail and the wind coming off the Skerry like a hand pushing at my back. Forty feet of old whitewash had gone the grey of wet slate, and the board wanted it bright and black by the summer inspection, a band you could see from three parishes away.

Below me, where the iron stair coils round the tower's throat, Tallis had a rag knotted at his wrist and a jam jar of linseed in one fist. He insisted the stair be painted from the inside out, a turn at a time, so no boot would slip on a wet tread. I did not argue. Thirty years on the rock had taught me that a man who gives orders about footing has usually fallen once himself.

Midmorning the ladder kicked on the wet stone and I caught the rail with my bare palm. The skin tore open across the heel of my hand and the first red ran down the sheeting in long threads, the way rust runs down a hull. Tallis wrapped it in gauze without a word, then took the brush from my good hand and laid a clean stripe along the edge where the old lime had ragged away. The fresh coat sat raised and shining, and he said it would hold once the tower had finished sweating.

That night I lit the lamp and watched the beam sweep out over the water, catching the black band so it seemed to hang in the dark. At the foot of the tower the spiral of paint on the lowest course curled like a shell left on the tide line, and I thought it looked less like a warning than a promise that the light would keep turning.
