South America map with ornamental pattern on ribs
Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of the continent of South America sits on the side of the torso. The outline is filled with dense black ornamental linework and tribal-style motifs along the western edge, while the eastern section holds a flower of life pattern of overlapping circles. The image is taken at an angle with a warm light, and a partial wing tattoo is visible on the arm at the lower left.

You are nineteen the summer Alba Restrepo hands you the chart box and tells you not to fold it. The continent lies inside on sheepskin, inked by a man long dead, and the fleet of Puerto Calma sails by it the way other towns sail by church bells. Your job is to trace it again each winter, because the damp eats the edges and the boats still need to find the river mouths.

The western coast is the hard part. Teodoro never drew the mountains as plain lines. He filled them with pattern, cusped arches and ladders and little serrated teeth, because he said the men who fished those waters steered by weather, not by ridges, and a mountain is only a shape the wind has been pressing for a long time. You copy the teeth one by one with a crow quill. Alba checks each against the tide tables and makes you redo the ones that look like sadness.
The east is different. There the sea is flat and endless, so he drew it as a flower of overlapping rings, dozens of circles each touching the next, a pattern with no outer edge. You spend the last week of winter on that part, your hand cramped, the ink drying faster than you can work. One night you notice the rings all agree on a single centre point, and you mark it with the smallest dot you can manage.
In April the boats go out in the dark and Alba walks you down to the mole. She takes the chart from you, unrolls the corner, and tips it toward the lantern so the circles catch the light. Give them the flower side, she says. The sea keeps no edges, and that is the part they will need to remember.
