Tiger eyes inside a feather on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A feather outline frames a close-up of a tiger's face, with its eyes and striped fur shaded in detail. A fine central quill line runs diagonally through the feather, which is tilted from lower left to upper right. The tattoo is in black and grey with soft gradients, and it sits on the side of a torso above a dark garment.

Mira had walked the ridge path to the dell every Thursday since the footbridge washed out, carrying lamp oil and a list her mother had written in pencil. The trees at the edge of the village were older than the church, and the old keeper, Tobias Vane, kept a hut where the path forked. He never came out to meet her. He left the parcel on the step with a stone on top to keep the wind off it.

One November he didn't. The door stood open, the grate was cold, and on the table lay a single grey-brown feather, long as her forearm, with a quill so fine it looked drawn in ink. Held up to the window, the vanes showed something beneath the barbs: a striped pelt pressed flat under the feather's skin, and in it two amber eyes that turned to follow her hand. She dropped it. It slid back to her feet and lay still, but the eyes had shifted to watch the door.
She found Tobias in the spruce beyond the hut, sitting with his back to a trunk and his head tilted, as if listening to something far off. "Tiger came down from the north hills in the frost," he said. "Old thing. Had lost its way and most of its name. I asked it to wait in the feather until the rivers run wide enough to carry it home." He said it the way he might say the bread had risen.
Mira looked at the trees, at the dark between them that had never been that dark before. Then she picked up the feather, held it against her chest, and felt something shift and breathe under the vanes. "Then I'll carry it," she said. "You've never once asked me to carry anything." Behind her the spruce stirred, and the amber eyes opened a little wider as the path turned north.
