Tiger face in a feather on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of a tiger's face sits within the shape of a feather, with the feather's quill running diagonally across the design. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine striping on the fur and strong contrast around the eyes. The image is in black and grey, showing the skin of the side torso below a black fabric top and a metal clasp.

The tiger came down from the hills the winter the river froze, and nobody in Saltcombe Reach thought to lock their doors, because everyone knew a tiger that wanted you would not bother with a door. Old Mercy Pell kept the lighthouse lamp trimmed and her boots by the stove, and she said the animal had come for the lamp oil, which made no sense to anyone but her.

On the ninth night it stood on the harbour wall with its breath smoking and looked at the lamp for a long time. Then it lay down in the wet grass and went quiet, the way a dog does when it has decided to stay. In the morning a grey feather lay on the wall where its head had been, long as a man's forearm, the quill pale and cracked with salt. Mercy picked it up and turned it over, and the barbs were striped like the animal's flank, dark on light, all the way to the tip.
She carried it up the stairs to the lamp room and set it in the window, where the gulls could not reach it. The tiger did not come back. The spring boats went out and came in, the river thawed, and somewhere up the coast a child who had seen the striped feather on the wall grew up to say the cat had simply turned itself into a feather and flown inland. Mercy never corrected him. She kept the lamp burning, and when the fog rolled in thick enough to hide the reef, the feather in the window caught the light and threw it back out to sea in two long, steady stripes.
