Space sleeve with planets, sun and stars
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A full sleeve covers the upper arm and forearm of a person in a dark blue sleeveless top, with a dark night sky of stars and comets. A bright sunburst and soft clouds sit near the shoulder, and several shaded planets, including a ringed planet, run down the arm. The shading is soft and detailed, with mostly grey and black tones and warm beige highlights on the planets and sun.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop pretending you remember the cricket square. Thirty-one years ago Mr Harcourt dragged the school telescope out onto it, because the sky over Ashby had cleared for the first time since Easter and he would not be told otherwise. Half of you were too busy throwing chips at Gary Pike to look up. The other half looked up and never forgot it.

The comet came first, a thin smear low in the north, its tail pointing away as if it had somewhere better to be. Then the stars came out so thick that Dawn Ellery swore she could see the dust between them. Mr Harcourt let us each hold the eyepiece for a count of ten. When it was my turn, Saturn was sitting in the lens with its rings tilted just so, pale gold against the black, like a coin someone had set down carefully on velvet.
Then the moon came up behind the pavilion and the whole sky washed out to nothing. He packed the scope away in silence, and when I asked why we had stopped, he said the sun was only ever lending us the dark, and it always wanted it back. I thought that was showman's rubbish at fifteen. I still think about it every time a sunrise catches the edge of a roof.
So raise your glasses to him, and if anybody still has the star chart he drew on the back of a dinner register, bring it up here. He would want the night logged properly. Saturn was sitting just above the pavilion roof, and I have never once looked at a ringed planet since without hearing him say that the sun always wants its dark back.
