Black ornamental design across a foot

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a yellow wooden floor, with a black ornamental design running from the ankle across the top of the foot and between the toes. The design uses flowing curved lines, scroll and leaf shapes, and scattered dots. It is rendered in solid black ink with no colour, and the composition shows the whole foot from the side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Maud had been stripping walnut hulls since dawn, and her fingers had gone the colour of strong tea. Her niece Ada sat on an upturned crate under the Bramley tree, watching wasps circle the windfalls. "Not yet," Maud said when Ada reached for the brush. "The paste has to rest or it runs like gravy."

The stain was thick and brown and smelled of cut grass and something sharper underneath. Maud had learned the pattern from her mother, who had learned it from a woman who came up the valley with a handcart of cloth and never gave her name. It was a paisley, Maud said, a teardrop with its head bent over, and every line in it was a path a stream takes when it is not sure where the sea is. Ada drew the first curl on the back of her own hand, then tried it again on the yellow boards of the packing shed floor, where the light came in sideways through the slats.

By noon the boards were freckled with dark dots and the leaf shapes had begun to skin over. Ada wanted to carry the pattern down the valley to the market, to show the cloth woman's descendants that someone still remembered. Maud only shook her head and pressed a thumb into the curl of a scroll, leaving a print that would not come off for days.

In the afternoon the wasps came down to the wet ink, one after another, and walked the lines as if they had been drawn for them. Ada started to brush them away, but Maud caught her wrist. "Leave them," she said. "They know the way better than we do."
