Spine and wing outline across a back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A person is photographed from behind with dark hair falling over the shoulders. A large black outline tattoo runs down the centre of the back, showing a stylised spine with individual vertebrae, flanked by wing-like shapes with fine webbing lines. The shading is minimal, the image is high-key with a plain white background, and the tattoo is the main focus.

The snow had come early that year, so Brother Cuthbert took the high path to Harrowgate with his satchel of splints and a lantern he did not bother to light, since the moon was full enough over the fell.

He found the shepherd's boy under a fallen beam where the drove road bent around the scree. The boy's back was bent wrong, and his spine stood up through the cloth like a row of grey stones in a dry wall. Either side of it, the shoulder blades had gone thin and sharp, almost like the frames of a kite left out in the rain. Cuthbert knelt in the wet and knew that skill alone would not save him. So he counted the bones aloud, one through twenty-four, as his master had taught him, and the counting gave the boy something to follow back to his body.

Spiders had come out of the cold to shelter in the hollow under the beam, and their webs had strung themselves between the boy's fingers and the tufts of heather. Cuthbert brushed none of them away. At dawn the boy woke with his back straight and asked where his dog had gone. Cuthbert said only that the dog was at the priory, and that the wind had carried the boy down the hill the way it carries thistledown.

That winter Cuthbert hung his satchel on the nail by the door and never again set a bone without first counting it aloud. The novices said he had grown fussy in his age. The shepherd's boy, grown and bearded, kept the lantern lit on the high path every year on the night of the first snow.
