Spiral brickwork tattoo with home lettering on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A spiral built from small brick-like tiles curls across the upper arm, with the phrase There is no place like home set along its outer curve. The word HOME is set in larger capitals beneath the spiral, and the tattoo is rendered in solid black ink with clean, even linework. The photograph is taken close up against a plain grey sleeve, with the tattoo placed centrally on the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Tennant laid the last course of bricks at Hollin Cross the autumn the line came through, and she laid them in a curl, because the navvies swore they could not walk a straight path across fields that kept turning under their boots. The spiral started at the water tower and wound inward, brick after brick, until the centre was small enough to hold a cup of tea.

Her grandson Rafe was the one who kept walking it. Every evening the 5.40 let him off at the platform, and he would go round the spiral the long way, counting the bricks with his lips moving, and come out at the middle where the old sleepers were stacked. Nobody asked him why. The porter said a boy should be allowed one foolish habit, and that a habit was cheaper than a doctor.

Then the fog came down so thick in November that the signal lamps were only smudges, and the 5.40 did not come. Rafe's mother stood at the gate with a lantern and called until her voice gave out. Rafe, who had been out on the spiral since dusk, found that the path under his feet had no ending he could see, only the next brick and the next, turning him gently back the way he had come. He kept his hand on the wall and trusted the curve.

He came out at the edge where the words ran round the outer ring, and the lantern light fell on them: there is no place like home. He stepped off the last brick onto the cinders, and his mother's hand found his sleeve.
