Snow globe with Saturn and mountains on forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A snow globe sits on a plain base, with a ringed planet resembling Saturn, scattered white stars and jagged mountains inside a dark night sky. The mountains and globe base are shaded with fine stippling and hatching, while the night sky is filled in solid black with white highlights for the stars. The tattoo is shown in black and grey, centred on a pale forearm against a dark background.

Mrs Okonedo brought the globe in on a Tuesday, wrapped in a tea towel as if it might wake. Its dome had a hairline crack running from the mountains down to the base, and when I tipped it toward the lamp the planet inside slid along its wire like a bead on an abacus.

The base read Souvenir of Glenfallow, which is not a place I could find on any map, though I looked. Mrs Okonedo said her husband bought it the summer before he went into the hospice, from a kiosk at the top of a funicular that had long since been dismantled. She didn't want it mended so much as she wanted to know it could be.
I resealed the dome with a bead of clear resin and reglued the ring. It took the whole afternoon, mostly because I kept stopping to shake it and watch the white specks drift over the peaks and settle again, as if they had somewhere to be and were in no hurry to get there. Glitter, I'd have said, if I hadn't been looking so closely. Nothing in a sealed world should move that carefully.
When she came back on Friday I had it on the counter, wiped clean, the crack a thin silver line nobody would find unless they were looking for it. She turned it over, read the base, and laughed in a way that made the shop feel smaller. Then she set it down facing the window, where the light could reach the mountains. 'He always said the planet was the only thing in there that wasn't cold,' she said. She paid in coins and left the towel behind.
