Spiral galaxy tattoo across the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Colour · Photo
A realistic spiral galaxy fills the back of the hand and extends onto the fingers, with a bright orange and yellow core surrounded by swirling arms of blue, teal and white stars. Soft blending creates a glowing, nebula-like depth, with darker navy shading at the top of the hand and reddish tones at the fingertips. The hand rests on a black leather surface, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Sit nearer, the peat is damp but it will catch if you leave it be. You will not have heard of Ruairidh Beag, the boy who swept the lamp room at Sgeir Liath before there was a lamp worth the name. He was nine summers old the year the sea went quiet for forty days and the gulls stopped crying over the harbour.

On the fortieth morning he walked down to the tideline with his grandmother's flour sieve and a jar of cold tea. The water had drawn back past the wrack, and there in the wet sand lay a wheel of light turning slowly, as if someone had spun a cartwheel of stars and left it to run down. Its arms were blue as mussel shells and dusted with white, and at its heart burned a coal the colour of marmalade. He knelt. He did not touch it, because his grandmother had taught him that anything shining on the shore belongs to whoever lost it.
So he waited. The tide came back, and the wheel lifted off the sand like a dandelion clock and drifted out over the water, spinning, until it was a smudge above the Ceann Mòr. Then it went out like a lamp turned down. But the sieve in the shallows was full of small cold stars, and when he tipped them into the jar they hummed against the glass.
He kept that jar on the windowsill of the lamp room for the rest of his life. On dark nights the stars inside it turn round and round, and the keeper's beam sweeps the same slow spiral across the water. The gulls came back to the harbour that autumn. Mind you, the old men still lift their caps at the sky when the wind drops, looking for the one that got away. Now pass me that cup and hush.
