Spiral horn and pink bow on a finger
Hand · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo runs along the side of a finger, showing a spiral horn shape outlined in black and filled with blue, teal and lilac bands. A pink bow with black outline sits at the lower end, and a few tiny blue and purple dots appear above the horn. The photo is taken from above at a slight angle, with the hand and a dark shoe and trousers visible in the background.

Bramwell the ironmonger had sold a great many things over forty years, but never a horn, and when the grey mare from the canal boats came tapping at his door one Thursday with her head lowered and a look of quiet embarrassment, he did not know where to put his hands. She had lost her horn, she said, somewhere between the lock at Hebden and the bridge where the swans nest. It had simply come loose, the way a tooth does, and she had not noticed until a child pointed and laughed.

He thought about it for a week. Then he took a length of copper wire, twisted it tight around a bent nail, and wound it into a spiral the way his father had taught him to coil a spring. He dipped the wire in a tin of powdered glass and rubbed in blue, then teal, then a lilac he mixed from the paint left over from the chemist's signboard. Each band he laid on carefully, the way you would sand the rail of a cradle.
When he brought it out, the mare looked at it for a long while. Then she asked for a ribbon, and he tied a pink one she had been saving since her foaling day around the base, bending it into a bow with thumbs that were suddenly clumsy. He flicked a few specks of blue and violet dust across the air, and they hung in the cold light like frost. She went off along the towpath with the ribbon flicking, stopping twice to look back at the shine of the glass, and Bramwell stood in his doorway until the frost on the cobbles had turned to water.
