Spiral staircase with light on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic black and grey tattoo shows a spiral staircase with a carved banister climbing towards a bright light source, with soft rays fanning out across the dark background. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong contrast between the deep blacks of the stair treads and the pale glow at the top. The piece wraps around the upper arm and shoulder, with a dark geometric pattern along the lower edge.

Dear Tom, the snow came on Tuesday and hasn't thought about leaving. Dad's ewes are in the top field and I've been walking the lambing shed twice a night with the lantern, which is why I've taken to the old tower stair again. You'll remember it: the winding stone with the oak rail Granddad carved the year before the war, every tread worn into a shallow dip in the middle.

Last night I counted them going up. Forty-one, then the turn, then the landing where the wall goes soft with damp. The lantern room at the top has a single round window, and when the cloud breaks the moon comes through it and lays rays down the stair like someone has pulled back a curtain. I stood there with the lamp out so I could see it properly. The light fell across the treads and the small triangles Granddad cut into the bottom step, which I'd never noticed before, and I thought, nobody builds a stair this strange to go nowhere.

Dad says the tower was for signalling boats when the river was still a proper road. I think it was for going up when the rest of the house was too low to bear. Anyway, I've decided to stop sulking about the mortgage and the broken gate and take the stair whenever the shed gets too much. Come at Easter. Bring the good boots, the ones that don't leak.

Love, Ruth
