Split heart tattoo across two palms

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two open palms face the camera, with a black outlined broken heart tattooed so that each half sits on one hand and the crack runs down the centre. The words FUCK and YOU are written in simple black lettering on the two halves. The linework is plain and even, with no shading, and the image is shot close up against a tartan sleeve on the left and a dark jacket on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last train to Carlisle was already breathing on platform four when Dessa pressed her palms to the carriage window. We had the hearts done the spring before, side by side in a back room above a launderette, the artist saying nothing but "keep still" while the needle went round. Her half sat on her right palm and mine on my left, and when we lined them up the crack ran straight down the middle like a seam.

We had argued about the words. She wanted them spelled out plainly, and I wanted something softer, but in the end we let the artist decide, and he asked us twice to confirm the two short words before he started. Now they sat one on each half, the lettering as simple as a shop sign. Nobody on the platform looked twice at two women holding their hands up to glass. A guard lifted his whistle. Dessa's breath fogged the window in a small round patch that cleared and fogged again.

The train shuddered and began to slide. Dessa kept her palm flat against the glass, and I kept mine against it from the outside, so that for a few yards the heart was whole again, two halves touching through the pane. Then the platform ran out and the carriage swung towards the tunnel mouth, and the glass held only her reflection and the grey light behind it.

I stood there until the wind off the tracks had gone cold across my hand. Then I put it in my coat pocket and walked back through the ticket hall, still feeling the shape of her fingers pressed to the other side.
