Fine line bow, arrow, notes and triangle on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together at the fingertips against a dark navy background. Each finger carries a small black fine line tattoo: a bow and an arrow with a heart-shaped tip on the index fingers, music notes, and a triangle with a circle and vertical line on the lower fingers. The thin, even linework is in black ink only, and the designs are centred on each finger.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

"No, you hold the bow like it owes you money, Ivy. Look how the tip wants to go to heaven." Mrs Pell lifted her two hands into the lamplight until the fingertips met in a steeple, and the shadow of it climbed the whitewashed wall of the Hollin Lane cottage. Nobody in the village had seen her shoot anything in forty years, but everyone agreed she had a true eye.

Long ago, she said, there was a woodcutter's daughter called Asha who loved a fiddler named Tobiah. He could coax three notes out of frost on a window, and he played them for her every evening from the far bank of the mere. Her father forbade the match and sent her to live with an aunt past the reeds. So Asha took her bow and one arrow whose head she had bent into a heart, because she had been told hearts were blunt things that never hit anything, and each dusk she shot it across the water. Tobiah caught it in his fiddle's f-hole, and the three notes came back.

The ferryman's iron triangle hung on the post between them, struck to call the boat, and one winter it rang out at the wrong hour. The reeds were cut, the mere froze, and on the last clear night Asha loosed her arrow over the ice. It did not land in the fiddle. It landed at her father's feet on the bank, and he picked it up, read the little heart, and walked out across the ice himself.

Ivy let her bow arm drop. "And did he hear the notes?" "Every one," said Mrs Pell, and folded her hands away, leaving only the wall and the lamp and a small bird of a shadow that was, for a moment, all that remained of the story.
