Split heart tattoos on both palms

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two open palms face the camera, each with a simple black outline of a heart split down the centre, so the two tattoos form a single broken heart when the hands are placed together. The words FUCK and YOU are written in plain capitals across the two halves, with uneven, hand-drawn-looking lines. The image is in colour, with the black ink standing out against the skin, rings on the fingers and a plaid background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marguerite, I am writing this on the back of a dockers' receipt because the good paper went to the bottom of the Tyne along with the last three sugar bags. You will want the news about the boat, so here it is: the Lady Ottoline is still afloat, the pump is still broken, and Gerry has still not paid me for the mackerel. The rest of this letter is about my hands, which you will not believe.

On Tuesday night, drunk on Gerry's rum and our own stupidity, Brian and I sat at the galley table with a biro and a bottle of cheap ink from the chandlers. He said a broken heart was the only honest thing a man could wear. I said a broken heart with a rude word in it would at least make the Customs man smile. So we drew them, one on each palm, pressed them together to match the crack, and then we argued for an hour about the spelling of the second word, which we both got wrong and then fixed with a rusty compass point.

This morning Brian took his palm to the pump, saw the ink had already started to spread, and said it looked like two lads had been dropped on their heads. I told him that was the point. He has not spoken to me since, though he did shake my hand at the gangway, very slowly, so the two halves would meet.

I enclose a scrap of the receipt with the drawing on it. Keep it somewhere dry. When the tide turns I will come home and show you both my palms, and you can decide which of us was the fool.
