Matching knot symbol tattoos on wrists
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two people hold their palms up to show matching tattoos on their inner wrists. Each tattoo is a single-line knot symbol with three looping arcs and a teardrop loop at the top, outlined in blue ink. The image is a casual outdoor snapshot on a grey pavement, with a gold bangle on one wrist, a silver bangle on the other and a striped bag at the edge of the frame.

Sit still, the lot of you, or you'll hear none of it. Right. Hafren Pit, the winter the cage jammed at ninety fathoms, and two brothers at the bottom with one lamp between them. Idris was the elder and Emyr was the one who sang when he was frightened, which was often, and that night he was singing the hymn about the Jordan, badly, so his brother could hear him through the rock.

Their mother, Nest Pryce, had sat up the night before with a hank of tarred hemp, tying the same knot twice, once for each boy's wrist. She made it with three bights that looped back on themselves and a little tear-shaped loop at the top where the line doubled, so a hand could feel it in the dark and know it was the same knot as its twin. She said it had no start and no finish. Idris thought that was nonsense. He was fourteen and knew everything.
Down there, with the water rising over their boots, Emyr's fingers found the knot on Idris's wrist and held on. Neither of them talked about the cage, or the men above already shouting numbers down the shaft. They traced the loops with their thumbs, over and under, until the hymn ran out and the rescue whistle came down through the rock. Nest had only wanted them to be able to find each other by touch, that was all the knot was ever for. Pass me the tea, Mags, and mind the cup, it's older than your nan.
