Split heart with devil and angel script on thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A split heart design sits on the outer upper thigh, with the left half in solid black tribal-style linework decorated with dots and the right half in red with a swirl and angel wings. Devil horns and a halo sit above the heart, a black devil tail curls below it, and script phrases in black surround the design. The skin is shown in a close, straight-on photo against a plain bedsheet background.

Gemma Thorne was on her third prosecco by the time I found her beside the raffle table, the only corner of the Crown's function room where nobody was pretending we were still thirty-five. She looked exactly as she had in Year Eleven, when she sat at the back of the coach to Whitby with a Tippex pen, drawing horns on everyone's name badge while I got on with being the sensible one.

We had a geography jotter between us back then, split down the middle like a pact. She took the devil side, all sharp black lines and a tail that ran off the page. I took the angel side, red felt-tip wings and a halo I kept going over until the paper tore. Underneath, in her handwriting, we wrote the thing we believed: a little bit of devil in those angels, a little bit of heaven in every wildside. We thought we were being profound. Mr Pryce, who taught us both RE and geography, thought we were being a nuisance.
I left Hollins at eighteen with the halo and a place at Leeds. Gemma stayed, took over the chip shop her dad left her, and never once asked me for anything, which I have always found harder to forgive than a favour.
She pulled a paper napkin from her handbag, uncapped a biro and drew a heart in two halves, one side inked dark and one left blank for red. Then she slid it across the sticky table. "You always had the better wings," she said. "I never could finish the tail."
