Split pineapple and pink circle on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a pineapple divided down the middle by a thin black vertical line, with the left half in the pink circle and the right half in black and grey. The pineapple is built from fine stippled dots and short strokes, giving texture to the leaves and skin, while the circle behind is filled with pink dots. The two views show the design from a close angle and from further back on the arm, against a plain white background.

Leave the crown alone, Tom, it's the only bit the customers look at. Ada wiped the blade on her apron and set the pineapple on the board, its spiky top still green and stiff as a hat. Their father had bought the crate off a Bristol ship for more than the stall took in a month, and now his two sons stood either side of the cart, not speaking.

Eli wanted the lot. Tom wanted the lot. Ada drew the knife straight down the middle in one pull, and the fruit fell open, yellow and wet, the leaves parting like the pages of a book. 'Crown goes to whoever can count to three,' she said, 'and the other half goes to whoever can carry it.' She laid both halves on the pink enamel tray their mother had used for rhubarb, and the sun came up over the breakwater and turned the whole stall the colour of boiled sweets.
They argued through the morning about which half was worth more. Tom had the feathery top and the crown, Eli had the heavy base and the sweet heart. But a woman in a grey coat bought the crowned half for a shilling and came back at noon for the rest, because it was the only thing she could think of to feed her mother, and after that the brothers stopped counting and started cutting. By dusk the crate was gone, and the board above the stall read Marl and Marl with a black line painted down the middle.
That night Eli scraped the last of the juice off the tray and found that the knife had left a fine dark line in the wood, straight as a rule. Neither of them had the heart to sand it out.
