Shaded angel wing on an upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large angel wing is tattooed on the upper arm, with rows of feathers fanning outwards from the top of the arm towards the elbow. The feathers have black outlines and soft grey shading that gives them a rounded, three-dimensional look. The photograph is taken at an angle with a warm vintage filter, and the arm is raised, with a watch visible on the wrist and a grey top at the lower edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third lodger to ask for the attic room that spring was a widow called Hester Quayle, and she came with a tin trunk and no questions. Mrs Garland, who kept the boarding house at the top of Gull Steps, gave her the key and warned her about the draught under the eaves, the one that whistled before rain. Hester only nodded. She had mended nets on the harbour wall until her knuckles gave out, and she knew a draught when it spoke to her.

Every evening after the supper bell, Hester climbed to the attic and sat by the round window with a jar of water and a sheet of thin paper. Nobody in the house knew what she was drawing. Mrs Garland swore she heard a nib scratching late at night, and once she found a curl of grey lead on the stairs, like a fingernail paring.

On the last night of the herring season the wind turned, the sea came up the steps, and the gulls went quiet on the roofs. Hester came down with the paper folded inside her coat and pressed it into the hands of Tom Ferrier, the boy who fetched coal. Take this to the lifeboat shed before the tide turns, she said. Inside was a wing, drawn feather by feather, each one shaded darker towards the root, as if the light came off the water and fell only on one side.

The lifeboat went out at midnight and came back at dawn with four men aboard. Mrs Garland never learned whether the wing had helped, only that the attic window stayed shut after that, and the draught never whistled again.
