Stacked script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the inside of a forearm showing two stacked words in thin black script. The lower word appears inverted relative to the upper one, and a small dot sits beside each word. The linework is even and solid black with no shading, set against a soft green blurred background.

Margit had not spoken to her sister since the funeral, which was a shame, because Ruth was the only one who knew how to fix a dropped stitch in the grey wool. "You've gone back to purl," Ruth said, not looking up.
"I've always purled. You're the one who knits everything backwards to be clever."
Margit had learned the small dot from their mother, who pencilled one on the pattern card wherever a row turned. Every row turned somewhere. Their father used to say the scarf was only ever one long argument, knit on the front and purl on the back, and that neither side could be seen at once without the other being hidden.
Ruth laughed first, a short sound like a dropped spool. She reached across, took the scarf, and turned it over in the low light, then held the back of it up to Margit's face. The stitches on that side were bumps and loops, the reverse of everything they had been making for forty years. It looked like a different scarf entirely. It was the same one, and for the first time in months Margit could see where the wool had been joined.
