Small blue anchor tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A small anchor with a looped rope detail at the top is tattooed in blue ink on the side of a finger. The linework is thin and even, with the shading kept minimal so the outline reads clearly. The soft-focus background and pale skin tones keep attention on the small design.

The third loop went wrong again, and Nell pulled the twine so tight it bit. Across the kitchen table her uncle Teddy had his reading glasses pushed into his grey hair and a blue biro uncapped beside the sugar bowl, the one he kept for chart work. "Bowline's a sailor's knot," he said without looking up. "Don't make it fight you. Let the rabbit come out of the hole on its own."

Beyond the window the Humber ran black under the lamps of the Alexandra Dock, and a ferry horn sounded twice, the way it always did before the night crossing. Teddy had worked the coasters for thirty years and came home at Christmas smelling of diesel and carbolic soap. He had never once asked her for anything. Tonight he tore a strip from the back of a shipping manifest, drew a small anchor on it with the rope wound round its shank, and slid it across the oilcloth to her.
"That loop at the top is the bit you keep," he said. "Whatever else goes over the side, you hold on to the eye." She turned the paper over. On the reverse he had written the date he would sail, and under it, in careful capitals, the word HOME, the H already smudged from his thumb. Nell tied the knot again, slowly, and this time the rabbit came out of the hole without a fight.
When she looked up he was standing at the back door with his cap in his hands, watching the dock lights as though he could count the ships. She folded the manifest into her coat pocket, next to the twine, and said nothing about the cold. Somewhere past the breakwater the ferry sounded once more, and Teddy went out into it without his glasses, leaving the blue biro on the table where she would find it.
