Three outline hearts on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Three hearts of equal size are drawn in thin black outline, lined up diagonally along the side of a finger. The linework is even and unshaded, with the skin showing through the centre of each heart. The background is a soft-focus yellow and white surface, which keeps attention on the small design.

Mrs Achterberg in 11C said it was the lad with the dog on the top floor, then said it was the girl from the flats behind the chippy, then said nothing at all when Gareth asked her to say it again. He didn't blame her. A block of two hundred flats keeps its secrets the way a lift keeps its noise: all the way up, and never quite where you can point at it.
On the seventh Friday the lino by the bin chute had a fresh smear of blue paint on it, and a chalk outline of a fourth heart, half-finished, right where the line would have carried on. Gareth stood with his knife for a long time. Then he fetched the tin of magnolia, prised the lid off, and left the wall alone.
