Stacked serif letters spelling arm on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows the outer upper arm of a person wearing a grey top, with a hand holding the sleeve at the left edge. The tattoo is three separate lowercase serif letters, a, r and m, stacked vertically down the arm. The ink is a soft grey-black with a slightly blurred edge, and the plain background of skin and fabric keeps the focus on the lettering.

The last job before the shop closed was a card for the Stallingborough Bowls Club, and Dilys Parr had only three small letters left in the top drawer of the case: a, r and m. They were worn soft at the shoulders from forty years of being pushed back into the wrong boxes, and she could find them in the dark by weight alone.

Her apprentice, Kieran, wanted to set the whole notice in the big Bramble face, the one the founder had named after his dog and nobody could afford to replace. He had the stick half full before he looked at the copy. 'You've not got enough of anything,' he said, holding up the three sorts in his palm. 'Who needs a, r and m on a bowls card?'
'The arm wrestling,' Dilys said. 'Second Thursday. The landlord wants the letters going down the poster like a bloke standing up straight, so the punters can see it from the bar.' Kieran set them one above the other, a, r, m, and the column stood there on the stick looking more like a forearm than a word.
They pulled a proof on the old Albion. The ink came up grey where the lead had worn thinnest, so the m looked faded and the a looked like it had been rubbed with a thumb. Dilys held it to the window for a long time. 'That'll do,' she said, and locked the forme for the last time.
