PARTY lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a clenched fist and forearm showing the word PARTY in vertical, bold serif capitals across the inner wrist. The lettering is solid black with crisp edges and sits in the centre of the wrist. Below, on a white surface, a mirrored stencil of the same word is visible, with the paper showing faint pencil guide lines.

I am writing this on the back of the hotel's one good postcard because the desk clerk has run out of everything except regret. The bus broke down outside Tolga at four this morning and we have been sitting in the shade of a water tower ever since, eleven of us and a goat that belongs to a man called Ruben. Ruben says the goat is the only reason the road has been kind to him. I have decided to believe him.
You will want to know about the stencil. Your brother's stencil, the one he cut from a sheet of oiled card in the shed and sent with me for the stall at the fête. I unrolled it on the bonnet of Ruben's lorry to show the boys and the word came out backwards, of course, PARTY in those fat serif letters, and the wind took the paper straight off the bonnet and rolled it halfway to the ditch. Ruben chased it with the goat. The goat won.
I am sending you the one I kept. It is smudged, and one of the Ys has bled into the margin, but you can still read it if you hold it to the light. Hold it up against your wrist if you like. Your brother always said a word should be worn, not framed, and I think he is right, though I would rather he had worn something sensible.
The bus will be fixed by Thursday, they say. Tell Dad I have not got lost. Tell him I have only got late.
Yours, through the dust, Fen
